The event was a grand success, with fabulous people, music, food, drinks, art exhibits, and auction items.

The student-athlete speakers (Ramona Parnell, Kadeem Campbell, & TJ Clarke) stole the show with their heartfelt speeches outlining the value of the Bronx Flash in their lives.

2009 International Children's Games

Athens, Greece - July 22-28

Once again, thanks to the New York Road Runners Foundation, the NYC Department of Education's Office of Fitness & Health Education and the NYC Sports Commission, the Bronx Flash collaborated with the PS/MS 15 Jaguars to join children from 6 continents around the world for the 43rd International Children's Games.

Day 2 Update (June 24): On day one of the competition the girls (Ki'Anna Tidball, Sarinah Muhammad, Christie Severino, and Sorangel Liriano) struggled to overcome jet lag, but performed to their best in the 800m heats.  The boys had their 100m preliminary trials.  All competed well and AJ won his heat to advance to the semi-finals.

In the afternoon, the team learned how to exchange their U.S. dollars for some Euros and then took a stroll around downtown Athens.

The opening ceremony was held that evening at the historic Panathinaiko Stadium in the shadows of the Acropolis.  Student-athletes made friends from around the world.  The most popular activity for students to participate in at the ceremony is to trade NYC pins for other countries' pins or memorabilia.  The opening ceremony was a stunning show put on by the City of Athens.  View photos here.

Day 1 Update (June 22/23):  Everyone arrived safely - though tired from the overnight 8 hour flight to Rome and then 2 hour flight to Athens.  Upon arrival, the team was greeted by a film crew that interviewed Wayne and Christie at the airport.  They then checked-in and hit the track to shake their legs out and get a little practice in.  View photos from day one here.

The Bronx Flash, thanks to the support of the New York Road Runners Foundation and the New York City Sports Commission, combined with PS/MS 15 to form Team NYC, the only U.S. team to place finalists in the boys 100 and 400 meter dash and the girls 400 meter dash.  While the boys 4 x 100m relay suffered a disappointing dropped baton on the opening exchange in the finals (they were the second seed behind Singapore going into the final), they recovered later in the day and challenged Singapore for superiority in the 4 x 400m relay.  After a back and forth battle, Singapore edged out Team NYC at the finish line.
